HIELERO CHIMBORAZO WALK

ITINERARY

DEPARTURE: 08h00 / This activity takes us about 5 hours of hiking in the mountains to the altitude of 4,800 masl, where we are part of the expedition of ice extraction, noting that this hard work is done with enthusiasm, and then the product obtained to transport it on mules to the markets of Riobamba, where it will be sold for the elaboration of juices, ice cream and also used in the markets for the sale of fish.

We begin by transporting ourselves in a 4X4 vehicle towards the sector of Nicolás Martínez Glacier, which was the historic route followed by the Scientist Alexander Von Humboldt in 1802 in his failed attempt to ascend the Chimborazo. At the altitude of 4,300 masl we started our walk that takes us to the work site of Baltazar Ushca, the last ice builder of the Chimborazo, in about an hour and a half of walking.

We had lunch in the company of the icemaker and then we observed the process of this hard work for a space of 2 or 3 hours. And we undertake the return to Riobamba.

RETURN: 16H00 or 17H00

NOTE: This tour can be done only on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays due to the work schedule of the icemaker.

Difficulty: Difficult, it is necessary a very good acclimatization and have glacier experience.

CABALGATA TO THE WATER FALLS OF ABRASPUNGU

ITINERARY

DEPARTURE: 09h00 / Following the route of the Inca, with an environment of mountains dressed in colorful crops, we rode for about 5 hours to the site called "Encañonado de las Abras" located between the volcanoes Chimborazo and Carihuairazo. We advance on horseback for the space of 2 hours towards the banks of the Mocha River, where we take a short break to continue on foot for the period of approximately one hour to the height of 4,000 meters where jealously hidden in the middle of the mountains we find "The Falls of water product of the melting of the Majestic Chimborazo ", discovering a beautiful natural landscape.

There are great opportunities to take photographs of this portion of paradise in whose bottom stands the waterfall, inviting meditation and stress.

After leaving for a few moments enjoying the surroundings, a Picnic is held, then after a short break, return to Riobamba or your usual destination.

VISIT THE CHIMBORAZO SHELTERS

ITINERARY

DEPARTURE: 08h00 / Feeling a bit like the Scientists Alexander Von Humboldt and Edward Whymper trying to find the eternal snows, we ventured to cross a part of the Andes Mountain Range, an automobile tour from the city of Riobamba, or from the Posada la Estación, with possibilities to observe a great variety of flora and fauna characteristic of the páramos, until bequeathing to the first refuge, in the white skirts of the wonderful "Chimborazo" located on the west side of this volcano whose height is above 4,800 masl.

On the route we can easily observe the vicuñas, in their wild state, whose reintroduction earned the Chimborazo to be named as a Fauna Production Reserve on October 26, 1987.

This activity takes about 8 hours, it is done in private transport, once we arrive at the first refuge we take a walk that takes us in a couple of hours to the second refuge (5,000 masl), depending on the physical condition and interest of the Visitors can continue along the route until they find the glaciers, located at approximately 5,200 meters above sea level. After a short rest, we begin the descent to the first refuge where we enjoy a well-deserved invigorating lunch. To then start the return also by private transport to the city of Riobamba or to "La Posada La Estación de Urbina".

WALK TO THE CHIMBORAZO GLACIERS

ITINERARY

DEPARTURE: 09h00 / From Riobamba in 4X4 vehicle that will lead us to an hour approximately, through landscapes we stop over the 4,000msnm, learning that nature is an inexhaustible source of energy that we must protect and take care of it. We start the walk that will last about 3 hours until we reach 4,800 meters above sea level, and as we walk we can easily see how the vegetation changes in its color and splendor until we reach an edge, where we make a strategic stop to see our wonderful environment consisting of herds of vicuñas in their natural habitat, we understand that our country is mega diverse, we will be surrounded by volcanoes on one side the volcano Carihuairazo and on the other as in a chain are the volcanoes Altar, Tungurahua and Sangay, volcanoes that are in constant activity and are part of the Sangay National Park.

Ecstatic for such beauty, we take a well-deserved rest to make way for a succulent "Mountain Lunch", after which we will begin the descent towards the city of Riobamba.

TREKKING TO THE VICUÑAS TRAIL
(2 DAYS)

ITINERARY

FIRST DAY

DEPARTURE: 09H00 / Leaving from Riobamba in transport to the Andean paramo about 3,000 masl from there we start a walk through onion crops, potatoes, beans, quinoa, cucumbers and so many products that are grown in height, until we find páramos that lead us to the skirts of the snowy Chimborazo, following the path used by the vicuñas, a South American camelid that after its disappearance from the Ecuadorian Andes were reintroduced thanks to the support of governments like Peru and Chile, they live in the high parts of it (4.500 masl and up).

After 4 to 5 hours of walking and with the help of mules and porters for the luggage, we arrived at the camping site at a height of 4.300 meters above sea level and with a beautiful natural frame composed of the colossus of the Andes and its nearby neighbor the Carihuairazo.

Dinner and accommodation in tent.

SECOND DAY

DEPARTURE: 07H00 / After an energizing breakfast we start the trek to the glaciers of Chimborazo following a steep path, we advance for the period of 3 to 4 hours to reach the height of the glaciers (5,000 meters above sea level) from where the weather allows us to see the impressive volcanoes of the Central Andes of Ecuador (the assets of Tungurahua and Sangay, the impressive Altar and the Carihuairazo)

After the cold lunch, we begin the descent to the camp and then continue by car to the city of Riobamba.

KNOW THE LAGUNAS DE ATILLO (2 DAYS)

The lagoons of Atillo are a lakeside complex of around 60 lagoons that are part of the Sangay National Park due to its beauty and natural environment, habitat of several species of flora and fauna, where endemic reigns.

ITINERARY

FIRST DAY

DEPARTURE: 09H00 from the hotel / Leaving the city of Riobamba we take the route to the west where we cross several small towns such as San Luis whose main celebration is held on August 5 of each year in honor of the Virgen de las Nieves and on August 25 in honor of San Luis Rey de Francia, we continue on the route and we find Punín where it was confirmed with the discovery in 1923, in the Punín ravine, of a skull from 4 to 5 thousand years before Christ, which would be a Homo Sapiens.

Continuing along the road, we arrive at towns like Flores whose indigenous fair is held every Sunday, Cebadas, where the women organized themselves, received European technical assistance and there they sell cheeses of all kinds with European technology.

Finally we arrive at this paradisiacal place called Lagunas de Atillo or Colay with a magical frame, on the road that leads to Macas.

There is a small tour of the lagoons and short walk.

Dinner and accommodation in tents or indigenous huts.

SECOND DAY

DEPARTURE: 08H00 / It is optional to take the hike in the mountain to see different types of vegetation from both the páramo and the amazon. Or make the walk to the natural viewpoint from where if the day is clear you can see the Sangay, which is always active.

Around noon, we return to the camp to enjoy a delicious lunch, after which we will return to the city of Riobamba.

OZOGOCHE ATILLO ADVENTURE

There are more than sixty lakes in the vicinity of Atillo - Ozogoche, the fog is a constant visitor to the area and the legends of people talk about the tribute of birds called cubicles that every year at the beginning of September hundreds of them fall into the water and they die in what has been interpreted as a mass suicide.

ITINERARY

FIRST DAY

Drive from Riobamba to Lake Atillo (3 hours). Begin hiking in Colay (3,500m.a.l) climb Baypungo hill 4,300m.s.l. to the Ventanas pass and camp near Lake Magtayan (5 hours walk), dinner and camp.

SECOND DAY

After breakfast we will walk from the camp to Lake Cubillina and then to the community of Ozogoche for lunch. Return to Riobamba (2 hours) (3 hours walking time).

End of the route

Horses are used to transport lots of equipment.

SIMON BOLIVAR ROUTE

Urbina Station – Mechahuasca – Carrel Shelter

The journey begins at the Urbina Station located at 3664 meters above sea level, the highest train station in Ecuador. It is crossed by the Andean Portal and valleys with sowings of varied colors and pajonales. Enjoy the beauty of the Andean landscape and the Abras Gorge, a geological formation that separates the provinces of Chimborazo and Tungurahua. Finally, you reach the Waterfall of Las Abras at a height of 4100m. From that point you can also see the glaciers of Chimborazo and the Carihuayrazo and Tungurahua Volcanoes.

MACHAY TEMPLE ROUTE

Carrel Refuge - Machay Temple - Condor House

Start at the Carrel Shelter, it is a walk where a place known as the Cathedral is crossed, which are large rock formations that assimilate the domes of a church. You can also see during the tour the ice mine, where in the past blocks were removed for commercialization in the city of Guaranda and its surroundings. Once in the Machay Temple, a cave of natural formation where the ancient indigenous people of the region used it as a ceremonial and veneration center for the Chimborazo Mountain. This site is considered for the realization of sacred rituals where several indigenous congregations currently make thanks to Mother Earth.

WHIMPER NEEDLES ROUTE

Carrel Shelter - Whimper Shelter - Whimper Needles

Approximate travel time: 3 to 4 hours

It starts from Carrel Shelter at an altitude of 4800 meters above sea level and reaches Whymper Needles at 5300 m altitude, passing through the second Refuge, also called Whymper. From that site you have a spectacular view of the mountain range and the Nevados: Tungurahua, the Altars, the Cubillines and the Sangay Volcano, being able in this experience to get as close as possible to the Chimborazo Snowy Glacier.

MACHAY TEMPLE ICE MINE ROUTE

The tour starts from the Carrel Refuge through the Machay Temple until it reaches the site of the perpetual ice mines of the Chimborazo Snowy at 5200 meters above sea level. Once there and if you have a bit of luck having the possibility of meeting the person who is harvesting the ice to market it in Riobamba for the preparation of fruit juices in one of the main markets of the City.

POLYLEPIS FOREST ROUTE

Carrel Shelter - Polylepis Forest

The tour starts at the El Arenal Tourist Services Center located northeast of the Chimborazo Reserve at a height of 4350 meters above sea level. During the tour you can see a desert in the moor of the Ecuadorian Andes, as well as a great biodiversity of the place until you reach a small redoubt of trees of the polylepis species commonly known as the paper tree.

Day 1: Urbina - Urkuhuasi - Mechahuasca

The journey begins at the Urbina Station located at 3618 meters above sea level, the highest train station in Ecuador. It is crossed by the Andean Portal and valleys with sowings of varied colors and pajonales. Enjoy the beauty of the Andean landscape and the Abras Gorge, a geological formation that separates the provinces of Chimborazo and Tungurahua. Finally, you reach the Waterfall of Las Abras at a height of 4200m. From that point you can also see the glaciers of Chimborazo and the Carihuayrazo and Tungurahua Volcanoes.

Day 2: Urkuhuasi - Mechahuasca - Refugio Carrel

Distance: 13 km

It starts from the Urkuhuasi Refuge located at a height of 4150, the Abras Gorge known as Traguñan is crossed, until it reaches the town of Mechahuasca located at 4300 meters above sea level, an indigenous community of the Tungurahua Province. The ascent begins surrounding the Chimborazo Snowy through different climatic floors that go from the Andean moorland, the puna to reach the area of ​​glaciers in the Carrel Refuge at 4800msnm.

THE ALTARES ROUTE

OPTION 1: Riobamba - Quimiag- Chanag - Inguisay - Los Altares

Day 1: Inguisay Bocatoma - Machay Camp

Distance: 7 km

Approximate travel time: 5 to 6 hours a day

The walk starts in the town of Bocatoma Inguisay. At an altitude of 3429 meters above sea level, surrounded by canals of Andean forests and forests such as polylepis (yahual) quishuar and native shrubs that are within the Sangay National Park, the second largest protected area in Ecuador declared by UNESCO as a natural heritage of humanity. You arrive at the Machay camp where you will proceed to dinner and have an interpretive talk of the area and describe the itinerary for the next day.

Day 2: Machay Camp - Italian Camp

Distance: 4 km

Difficulty: Medium High

Approximate travel time: 5 to 6 hours

Breakfast and start the walk to the Italian camp at a height of 4300 meters visiting the 6 lagoons of different colors. During the tour you can see the Sangay Volcano, Los Cubillines and the Chimborazo Snowy, as well as the flora and fauna. Box Lunch during the tour. In the afternoon you can admire the Andean sunset for the installation of the camp. Dinner and rest.

Day 3: Italian Camp - Chañag - Riobamba

Breakfast and start the walk back to the community of Chañag and return to the city of Riobamba.

 

OPTION 2: Riobamba - Hacienda Releche - Laguna Amarilla

Day 1: Hacienda Releche - Refugio Collanes

Approximate travel time: 6 to 7 hours a day

The walk begins at the Hacienda Releche located in Penipe Canton, Candelaria Parish at an altitude of 3300 meters above sea level, the crossing path is a horseshoe path where you can appreciate the mountainous landscape and admire the valley planted with agricultural crops in the area as well like the Capac Urcu with its 7 peaks and different heights and in the center of the Capac the appreciated yellow lagoon. In the afternoon you will arrive at the Collanes Refuge where you will proceed to dinner and have an interpretive talk of the area and describe the itinerary for the next day.

Day 2: Collanes Shelter - Yellow Lagoon - Riobamba

Distancia: 10 km

After breakfast, the trek begins to the famous yellow lagoon located at an altitude of 4250 meters. From there you can see the valleys, polylepis - yagual trees, and the majesty of the Andean Condor. After taking a picture and a small walk around the lagoon, you return to the city of Riobamba.
